New Season gets underway for Merseyside Ability Counts League

Five teams representing Sandfield Park School plus teams from Broadgreen International School, Cavendish High and Merefield kicked off the 2015/16 season of the Merseyside Ability Counts League at Greenbank Sports Academy on 25th September.

The teams, which play in two of the Ability Counts Leagues; Secondary Physical Disability, Secondary Severely Learning Disability (SLD) had a fantastic day of friendly competition.

At the end of the first fixtures Sandfield Park A top the PD League, taking maximum points from four games and Cavendish High lead the SLD League, just above Sandfield Park E on goal difference.

Mark Horlick, LCFA Disability Football Development Officer said:

“The atmosphere here has been great – all those involved have had a fantastic time. It’s so important that everyone has an opportunity to experience competition at their level and enjoy the camaraderie of team sport.”


The next league games are due to be played at the Academy on Friday 29th January 2016.

Free Inclusive Circuit Training Sessions

Thanks to funding from Carillion’s Liverpool Community Fund, we are able to offer free* Inclusive Training sessions, at our Sports Hall.

The sessions, which are led by an experienced instructor, are suitable for all levels of fitness and ability, provide an opportunity for participants to develop strength and endurance fitness.

Starting on Wednesday 30th September, the opportunity is available for twelve weeks, with sessions running Wednesdays 4 ‘til 5pm and Sundays 5 ‘til 6pm. The last session takes place on Sunday 19th December.

Sports Hall Duty Manager Dave Stanistreet commented:
“We’re delighted to be able to offer such a great opportunity for disabled people to improve fitness levels. There’s no need to book, or commit to the whole programme – just turn up when you can and we’ll make sure that everyone can get involved and improve fitness levels.

We really appreciate the support of Carillion which has enabled us to offer these free sessions.”

Table Tennis Players wanted for the Merseyside Para Open

Table Tennis

The Merseyside Para Open will be taking place this year on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 December 2015 at Greenbank Sports Academy. Entry to this exciting event is open to all players with a disability.

There will be four competitions taking place over the weekend:

  1. Doubles  
  2. Junior Singles
  3. Open Singles
  4. Class Singles

Classification will be dependent on disability and functional ability. See the Information Sheet for further details.

Medals/trophies will be awarded to Winners, Runners-up and Third place in each category.

Entry fee is £15.

Closing date for entries is Friday 27 November 2015.

Liverpool Based Wheelchair Basketball Player Part of European Glory

Abdi Jama in training at Greenbank Sports Academy

Liverpool based wheelchair basketball player Abdi Jama was part of the GB team crowned European Champions, for the third consecutive time, following a tough final against Turkey, at the event played at the University Arena, Worcester on 6th September.

The closely fought match finished 87 – 66.

Abdi and team mate Ade Orogbemi (now based in Italy) have a close connection with Greenbank Sports Academy, where both have trained regularly for the past 15 years.

Sport Development Manager Mark Palmer commented:

“It’s fantastic to witness the success of Abdi, Ade and the whole GB team. They are fantastic role models for disability sport and always help us to promote the activities that we offer locally for disabled people. This was a fantastic win and builds confidence in the lead up to Rio next September.”

Boccia Players Wanted

Players are wanted for the Merseyside Open Boccia Championships which takes place at Greenbank Sports Academy on Sunday 4th October from 10am to 6pm.

The event is open to disabled people from the North West and players will be divided into classifications dependent on their disability and functional ability (See entry form for details).

There will be medals awarded to the 1st and 2nd in each group.

The entry fee is £5 per competitor and cheques should be made payable to North West Boccia Development Association.

Pride of Merseyside Award Winners

Congratulations to the Sports Academy’s Choices for Disability Sport Programme staff for winning the 2015 Sports Team Award at the Pride of Merseyside Awards, held on 4th September.

The Echo Pride of Merseyside Awards provide recognition for ‘special people, doing special things’ nominated by the local community and is run by Trinity Mirror.

Sport Development Manager Mark Palmer said:

“The team are delighted to receive the award for doing something that we all love – increasing sporting opportunities for disabled people.

This Award helps to boost our profile and spread the word about what we do, so hopefully more disabled people will come along to our sessions and get involved.
