Greenbank Team Boccia 2018

Greenbank Sports Academy played host to fourteen boccia teams, from across the country at Team Boccia 2018 on 18th March.

Organiser Steve Sullivan said:

“The competition was threatened to be cancelled due to bad weather conditions and it is testament of how much players enjoy these events that they overcome the snow and bad roads to get to Greenbank.

Many thanks to all the referees who also braved the severe weather and gave up their time to ensure the event went ahead.”

He added:

“The standard of play was very high throughout the day.”

The eventual winners were Blackpool Boccia C Team, who were undefeated throughout the competition and were worthy champions.

KS4 Basketball Competition 2018

Sixty children from six schools across Merseyside took part in the KS4 Basketball competition held at Greenbank Sports Academy on Monday 19th March 2018.

After some very close games throughout the day Crosby High A won the advanced section, Childwall Abbey B the intermediate section and Merefield and Palmerston schools  the novice section.

Robert Johnson from Crosby High School (Sefton) said:

“Despite mixed fortunes, all my players enjoyed the high level of competition.”

Thanks to Panathlon Association for providing medals and certificates for the competition, Greenbank College for providing volunteers and to Liverpool Basketball Club for providing referees.

Secondary Panathlon Challenge 2018

Gold medal winning team; Sefton

A total of seventy-three children representing six local authorities took part in the Secondary Panathlon Challenge at Greenbank Sports Academy on 15th March.

The event, which included Boccia, table tennis, football, table cricket, athletics and slalom involved children from Liverpool, Wirral, Sefton, St Helens, Knowsley and Halton.

After an exciting day of sports, Sefton were declared gold medallist with 48 points, with silver awarded to Liverpool on 42 points and Knowsley in bronze medal position on 40 points.

Organiser Steve Sullivan said:

“This event showcases the level of ability of participants and allows school teams to identify potential stars of the future, especially amongst those children who were competing for the first time and we are extremely grateful to Panathlon Association for their continued support of this event.

He added:

“It was a great success; bringing together schools, Panathlon Association, volunteers from Greenbank Sports Academy, Liverpool John Moores University and individuals to offer an excellent day of competitive multi-sport that the children thoroughly enjoyed. “

Doing our bit for Sport Relief

Sport Relief is back once again between Saturday 17 and Friday 23 March and we’re excited to announce that we’re taking part! With the theme of ‘Whatever Moves You’ in mind, we’ve got a range of activities that everyone can get involved in to help support this fantastic event.

Activities on offer include

Greenbank Sports Academy Centres and Clubs Team Boccia Tournament
Sunday 18 March
Players will play for the Sport Relief Cup. Donations welcome.

Inflatable Obstacle Course
Monday 19 March 5.15 – 6.15pm
Targeted at Disabled participants with autism. For Sport Relief week we are opening it to friends and family.
£3 (includes optional £1 donation to Sport Relief)

Cycling
Tuesday 20 March 10-12 noon
Cycling session to give disabled people, their friends and family an opportunity to cycle together in Sefton Park. You could even wear fancy dress.
£3 (includes optional £1 donation to Sport Relief)

Rebound Therapy
Wednesday 21 March 5-8pm
Fun exercise session for disabled people using a trampoline. Participants can participate in a 2 minute sponsored bouncathon. Sponsorship forms available from James Dixon.

Liverpool Wheelchair Handball Club V All Stars
Wednesday 21 March 6-7pm
A fun friendly match of wheelchair handball – Just turn up to play

Wheelchair Basketball
Wednesday 21 March 7-8pm
Come and challenge Paralympic wheelchair basketball medallist Abdi Jama in a free throw contest. Signed shirt for the winner with most free throws. If scores are equal the winner will be drawn.

Multi Sports (Ages 8+)
Friday 22 March 5-6pm
Come and participate in our sports club in fancy dress.

Guess Jonnie’s Steps
How many steps do you think Paralympic sprinter Jonnie Peacock will track on the Sport Relief app in one day? Each guess costs £2 with the person who guesses the number closest to Jonnies step total is the winner. They get to keep half the cash, while the rest goes to Sport Relief to help change lives. Guesses must be made by Thursday 22 March. Call in and visit reception to add your guess.

Power hockey tournament 2018

Division 1 winners, Broadgreen International School

Twenty five children from schools across Merseyside took part in the Power Hockey tournament held  at Greenbank Sports Academy on 12th March.

Broadgreen International School (Liverpool) were the division 1 winners, defeating Saint Francis Xavier (Liverpool) 3 – 1 in a hotly contested final.

In the second division final, Woodchurch High School (Wirral) defeated Sandfield Park A (Liverpool) 3 – 2 after scoring the winning goal in the last minute.

Congratulations to all players who took part and many thanks to Panathlon Association for providing medals and certificates for the event.

Lord’s Taverners County Table Cricket Competition

Thursday, March 1st, 2018

Approximately 30 children from Sandfield Park School took part in the Lord’s Taverners County Table Cricket Competition at Greenbank Sports Academy on 22nd February. The Panathlon supported event was organised by Rob Tipping, Disability Cricket Officer at Lancashire County Cricket to decide who would represent Merseyside at the regional finals, to be held at Old Trafford.

This honour was awarded to their C team.

Sue Barry from Sandfield Park said:

“It was a great experience for the children, who received advice on how to play throughout the day which benefited them immensely and will improve their chances of progressing from the Regional to the National Finals at Lords.”
