Broadgreen Victorious in Power Hockey Tournament
8 teams from 6 local schools (St Chads School (A and B teams), The Mosslands School, Sandfield Park School (A and B teams), Woodchurch High School, Wirral, Broadgreen International School and Saint Francis Xavier College (SFX), took part in an exciting Power Hockey tournament at Greenbank Sports Academy on 19th November.
The tournament, which involved approximately 40 disabled and non-disabled children, was fiercely fought, with Broadgreen International School declared champions, after beating rivals SFX by 3 goals to 2 in an exciting final.
Marcus Harrison, Captain of the Broadgreen team said:
“It’s great to be able to play this exciting sport competitively, with my non disabled school friends and brother. I’ve had a fantastic day – made even better by winning the tournament!!”
Tournament organiser Steve Sullivan commented:
“Today’s event has enabled disabled children; particularly those who use an electric wheelchair, to take part in a contact team sport, alongside their non-disabled friends, using a purpose built wheelchair. This enables players to pass and shoot a ball using a unique propulsion mechanism and have fun in a fast, competitive team sport. “
Medals were presented by Shelley Woods and Nathan Maguire, who are using Greenbank Sports Academy’s facilities for training in the lead up to the Rio 2016 Paralympics.
Power Hockey sessions take place every Wednesday from 5 – 6pm – new players welcome.
