Wheelchair Rugby
Wheelchair Rugby was developed in Canada in the 1970’s by quadriplegics who wanted an alternative to Wheelchair Basketball. Originally called Murderball It meant that athletes with hand and arm impairments as well as lower limb impairment could compete equally. It was first in the Paralympics as a full sport in Sydney 2000.
The game is played in rugby wheelchairs on a basketball court, at either end 2 cones indicated the goals, A white volleyball is used. The aim of the game is to score a point by getting the ball across the opposing teams goal, a point is scored by both front castors of the chair crossing the goal line as well as the ball. There are 2 types of chairs offensive and defensive. Offensive players usually score and defensive players block opponents but using a pick bar on their chair.
